Phnom Penh riverfront taken from Chroy Changvar Taken at 4.56pm, there are a total of 24 cars in this shot that stretches from the Silver Pagoda to St 144. The foreground shows the vegetable plots on the peninsula before land reclamation, building, new road construction and the present riverfront path. Photo taken 1998

Chroy Changvar, Tonle Sap river, Phnom Penh. Further up from the vegetable plots was an area used as a park, which had a football pitch and cows and goats grazing. Larger vessels would drop anchor and often stay put for months. The construction of the Himawari Hotel is seen down river, and Naga Boat.

Street 106 near corner of Norodom Boulevard. There was a canal/moat from the river between St 106 & 108 where the grass is during the 1890s and early 30s. It encircled the French quarter up Monivong BLVD and ran back to the river. The tower ( since demolished ) was the lookout by the Treasury Bridge spanning the canal, Khmers needed permission to enter the French quarter. Photo taken 2004

Corner St 5 and St 130. This building had been neglected since the mid seventies, like numerous other colonial buildings in the city, renovating often being more costly than a new build. Several historic buildings were allowed to be pulled down. Many have now been renovated including this one with a restaurant on the ground floor. Photo taken 1998

It was a precarious existence for hundreds of children. A pungent garbage city, knee-high with flies. The site was closed in 2009.  Photo taken 1998
